What are these crazy things called phytonutrients?  phyto means “plant” so phytonutrients are plant nutrients - the plant’s [healing] chemicals found specifically in plant food.  These phytonutrients are critical for health, shown to reduce the risk of cancer, decrease inflammation [linked with most chronic disease, including asthma], and have anti-viral/anti-bacterial properities.  In order to give our body the healing messages of these phytonutrients, we must eat REAL, whole unprocessed plant food.

Americans are eating around 150 pounds of sugar EACH year!  As Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, CNS notes in her book Get the Sugar Out, sugar has been linked with multiple health problems [cancer, impaired immunity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes Type II, obesity, and many more].  Many parents notice that sugar also affects their child’s mood, activity level, and ability to concentrate. Let’s face it - most of us love sweets. So what are some sweet alternatives? Minimally processed sugars are natural and contain beneficial nutrients - and some do not cause rapid spikes in blood sugar like the white table sugar.

Yes, you read that right; it does say ‘talking’. You have probably heard or read about how important it is to eat a variety of REAL food and to make sure to have foods of different colors. Well, as it turns out, that’s even more important than you may realize. Sure, when you eat lots of different colored foods, naturally colored that is, you are getting a variety of vitamins and minerals. Most recently, however, scientists have discovered that equally as important to those vitamins and minerals, and maybe even more important, are the phytonutrients in REAL food.

Moms are always asking me what they should feed their children. After I talk with them about all the REAL foods kids need to be eating daily - fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains and organic animal products - inevitably I start getting questions about crackers, cookies, cereals, breads, pancakes, muffins, granola and all the other grain products kids love.  The easy answer is for me to suggest to switch to whole grains. Stop eating enriched flour products. At least there are some more nutrients in whole grain products, right? Unfortunately the answer is not so simple.
